Meanwhile at home: Anyway. Being at MIT means quickly finding out that most people dont really know how to do most things. However, a lot of people are confident that they know how to learn how to do things (ew, sorry for the string of prepositions), and mixed with a few people that are really really good at doing things, you get a community of igloo-building, solar-system-simulating nerds. Ive run into a lot of people, both at and outside of MIT, who say things like Im bad at math, or coding just isnt my thing, or wow, thats so hardcore, Id never be able to figure out how to do that. And to some extent, that might be truetheres a barrier to entry to every field. But in a lot of cases, that sort of attitude is self-fulfilling; a lot of people who seem incredibly skilled got that way by having the audacity and egotism to say that something isnt hard to learn, and that they can learn it, and that the best way to learn it is to do it without really knowing how. So Im going to talk a bit about things Ive done recently. Here we go! 1. I made a Twitter. And a Twitter robot. Last week, I applied for an undergraduate research position in the Media Lab. As part of the interview process, I was told to (1) Learn about the Twitter API, (2) make a robot on Twitter, (3) have it do a bunch of things programmatically, like change its profile picture and search for somebody to follow. Heres the result:   Lets be clear. Before going into this project, I had only a vague idea of what API meant and how I might go about using it to make a program that did things on the Internet. In fact, Ive never really even used Twitter before. After doing thiswell, I know sort of what an API is, and Ive successfully used it to do something. I read through some of Twitters API documentation, and some of it made sense to me. I found some code online that made the Twitter API really easy to use (its a library called Tweepy) and I spent some time reading the documentation for that as well. Then I downloaded it, made a Twitter account, typed a few lines in Python, hit F-5 to run, andthere it is. Not bad. If yall have ideas about what I should do with this robot, comment belowor hell, tweet at me! Because I have a Twitter now! 2. I digitized a wiffle ball. CAD stands for Computer Aided Design, and basically what it lets you do is draw pretty pictures to represent computer models of real-life things. Being on the Design/Build/Fly team gets me access to SolidWorks, which is one brand of CAD software, though other brands are available for free (for example, the student version of AutoCAD). Last week, I made a wiffle ball. This was much harder than I anticipated it being. After all, its just a ball with holes in it, right? Ive never really had any formal SolidWorks training (in fact, if you talk to most of my classmates here, Ill doubt you can find someone who has) but Ive had some experience using this for Design/Build/Fly and for undergraduate research work. The best way to learn is really just to work through a couple of online tutorials, and then pick something off your desk and model it. Because, well, why not? SolidWorks is basically a video game. Working on CAD makes you feel kind of like a certain superhero: 3. I made a computer model of a water rocket. Okay, this is something I did for class at the end of last semester, but Im going to put it here because its cool and I havent talked about it yet. Water rockets are pretty interesting animals, because the idea that you can make a soda bottle fly a few hundred feet by pressurizing some water is pretty wild and not necessarily intuitive. So when my professor in Unified Engineering (woo aeroastro) told us that we had to model a water rocket and predict how high it was going to go, we were kind of just like Well, not knowing how to do things never stopped us before. Heres what I ended up with, courtesy of MATLABs differential equation solver and a couple of hours worth of arithmetic.   The first graph is a model of the thermodynamic cycle running the bottle rocket. The second is a model of the bottles altitude as a function of time. I could talk more about how this model works, but thats likely to be full of jargon and not very informative (contact me if you wanna talk about it). What you need to know is that it relies on making a lot of assumptions and idealized cases, and knowing what assumptions to make is what makes an unapproachable problem manageable. And although its true that I wouldnt have been able to do this without a semester of thermodynamics and a semester of differential equations, it bears mentioning that Ive never taken a formal class on MATLAB before. Bonus schematic of our bottle rocket: 4. I cooked food for myself As I mentioned, its snowing really hard and its cold outside. It doesnt help that MITs meal plan only opens one cafeteria over IAP, and thats in Baker (which is about a mile across campus from where I live). So I decided to take a dive and spend a month without the meal plan, which meant learning to make food for myself. I spent some extra time helping my mom in the kitchen over winter break, and picked up a few recipes. I tagged along with some hallmates when they went shopping, asked for advice, bought some supplies, checked for all the major food groups, and got to work in Beasts communal kitchen. Then I tried some of the things I learned from my mom, with friends help. Making wontons:     Pseudo-scallion pancakes:     Ive also learned how to cook chicken (turns out everything tastes pretty good with salt, pepper, and soy sauce), prepare pasta (much easier than I thoughtfollow the instructions on the bag), and fry eggs (especially delicious with those scallion pancakes). I guess my point is that a lot of things seem hard until you try them. But when you know how to use Google and when you know who to ask for help, everythings possible. We started Unified Engineering with no knowledge of how airplanes work, but our very first lab was to design a balsa glider. By telling us to do things before we really know how, Unified forces us to learn fast and ask for lots of help. That attitude gets you experience and skillsets that you cant easily take a class for, like how to use MATLABs differential equation solver or how to wrap a wonton. So have fun. Make mistakes. Make a mess in the kitchen. Glue your fingers together. Launch a haywire rocket.

Napoleon managed to maintain the lesser ideals of the French Revolution. However, he managed to do this by giving all of the former ideals a ‘twist’ of his own if he was displeased by them. This included the fact that he re-wrote the constitution that had previously been written; he partially reversed the relationship with the Church, turning France into a Catholic country. It can also be stated that the way he gained power was against the French Revolution’s ideals: and this was the very beginning! On the other hand, Napoleon managed to maintain equal taxation, which had previously been a big issue, especially for the poor. Napoleon made sure that all newspapers wrote news he approved of: he censored all press and made sure that everything delivered was official propaganda. He reduced the amount of political journals published from 73 to 9 and made it clear there were to be no new ones. All articles were written by Napoleon himself or one of his ministers. On top of that, more than half of the printing-presses were shut down and remaining publishers were forced to take an oath declaring loyalty to the government. Have you ever told someone that you are not a â€Å"mind reader† and you need them to specifically state their needs or what they are wanting? Or the opposite situation where you were able to tell what a person was going to say even before they even said a word? These examples illustrate differences between low and high context communication styles. People have a dominate way they prefer to communicate and cultures define these styles. There are differences in the way high and low-context culture members behave and interact with each other. However, there are times and situations where an individual will flex their style based on the situation at hand. In the end, both styles can be an effective way to communicate in the proper situation or context. A low-context culture is one that is explicit in its communication, orally and in writing. These cultures tend to be dominant individualistic cultures such as white, Anglo-Saxon Americans and Germans. In these cultures there is a desire to be very clear about communicating what they mean to ensure that there is a common understanding with other parties. For example in a low context culture, successful project managers and the teams will be very clear with deadlines and deliverables, such as the 2 page summary report will be due on Tuesday at 1pm. A person that favors a low context culture will appreciate the clarity in goals and expectations. Societies that favor low context communication are also seen as monochronic. These people find comfort in doing one thing at a time, make time commitments, are accustomed to short-term relationships, and stick to plans. An example of a profession that tends to be low-context is engineering. There is a saying that many engineers can easily relate to: â€Å"A place for everything and everything in its place†. This saying implies a high need for organization. I have worked on assignments with several engineers that get easily frustrated when details of the project or product change mid-stream due to a shift in the marketplace or a customer request. The feedback that is given to me from a few of the engineers is that it is difficult to deliver a project on-time when things change. However, without the change, the project may not achieve its overall goal: to satisfy the customer’s need. This is a prime example of how low-context cultures prefer to be very specific. They favor very clear, specific, and fixed objectives. On the other hand, high context cultures communicate in an implicit manner where members understand the message without direct oral or written communication. Mexico and Japan are examples of high-context cultures. People in these cultures have a difficult time refusing a direct request or disagreeing with others in public. There is a heightened sense to not embarrass others or to be embarrassed in these cultures. These cultures also are more polychronic. People that are polychronic are flexible with time commitments, are easily distracted, tend to form deep and long relationships, and value relationships over deadlines. Working with high-context cultures can feel very difficult for low-context individuals that are not aware of the difference in styles. Based on my personal experience when dealing with a high-context cultures and individuals, I have had many challenges because I was not aware of the culture difference. The challenges developed because I was not aware that the group may have been avoiding difficult conversations. For example, I thought that I had agreement from others in a Mexican factory with clear deadlines and deliverables for a project. Only later to find out that they thought our agreement was more of a â€Å"target† or a guideline for them to work towards. Deadlines were often missed by weeks even with weekly meetings confirming deliverables and deadlines. Another example using a similar context that I have had is when asking a team member from China and Mexico a question such as â€Å"are we on-schedule or ahead of schedule† and getting a reply of â€Å"yes† because it’s difficult for them to reply with an answer they may feel with disappoint me if the project is behind schedule. This can prove to be detrimental to a project if it’s unclear the project is behind schedule. However, a great attribute of high-context teams is their willingness to be flexible. They can also leverage their strong relationships with others to get tasks accomplished effectively. Both high and low context cultures will change their style based on certain circumstances and situations. I have personally seen communication styles flexed in contract negotiations. Many contract negotiations that I have been involved in have a final written document that both parties can use to refer back to at later times to understand the original agreement. This document is very explicit in nature and has specifically defined terms and language. This is an example of a low-context form of communication that high context cultures use even if it may be more comfortable to go through the negotiations using more high-context communication and strategies such as talking through ideas and feeling the other party out using social environment situations. On the other hand, an example of low-context individuals using high context tactics may happen is when couples are dating. Very few emotions or expectations are communicated explicitly early on in the relationship but yet even low-context individuals can â€Å"read between the lines† about another person’s feelings or emotions during the courtship phase. Another example of high-context communication that can be used by low-context cultures is the use of silence. This can be a very powerful tactic to encourage others to say more than they might normally say to break the silence or if they are assuming you are waiting for more information before responding. Silence can be a negotiators’ best friend when used appropriately to gather more information from other side. The Japanese have been known to use silence or length of pauses to communicate messages such as disagreement or rejection of an offer. In summary, high and low context cultures can behave in very different, almost opposite, ways when communicating. However, each can and will use other others’ style in different situation. The key for effective communication is to understand the other’s contextual style and be ready to be flexible to change your style as needed. Both low and high-context styles can be used to communicate well and neither is better than the other.

With the motivation with internal drives and impulses. He made decisions, set goals, worked toward achievement, and informed task to be done. The autocratic leadership Schaeffer used had little trust in employees and systematically exclude them from decision making. His leadership behavior helped the organization achieve its objective. When individuals gets to the point he or she realizes they can not run a company alone that is participative management. They bring people in that add and create value. Autocratic style is occurs when leaders have meetings and members suggest things and the leader takes the best suggestions and uses it without members voting. Leaders should shifts from internal concerns to external concerns to ensure the company is running well and is providing consumers with the companies product. With external concerns the leaders should give up the day-to-day control. They may impact and control the company but they can not control the external environment (Schaeffer). The score of my Leadership and Team Self-Management Assessment My score for the leadership and team self-management assessment was 50. The score total explains that I have excellent team leadership skills. Leading a team, management needs to bring together diverse talent, define goals, arrange efforts, and manage the relationships between team members (McBride, 2012). The team leader with skills in authority to set directions, democratic leadership if the team is successful, and the ability to re-establish team relationships if there is an issue. A good leader can find the teams strengths and outline the purpose of the team. Each member is unique in his or her own way rather it is their age, race, their motivation, or his or her ethnicity that brings diversity to the team. A manager should listen to the members of a team and offer their thoughts to lead a positive discussion. Keeping up-to-date with training will help leaders or manager with teams on the projects of his or her organization. Leonard Schaeffer leadership styles and traits In Schaeffers early career his leadership style was Autocratic Leadership. He realized that autocracy is the most painful, least enjoyable, and has its place if in a turnaround situation (Schaeffer, 2002). After his autocratic leadership in turning around the company, he realized he had to change his leadership style. The company began to focus on creating innovative products and excellent customer service, along with any decision instead of no decision. His role to ensure the organizations long-term success when the company changed so he had to change. Schaeffer changed from autocratic leadership to participative leadership style. The participative leadership style at the company they set four or five clear goals for the team to meet and gave them free rein to meet those goal as long as they stayed on budget. He laid out specific strategies for each goal. Managers had to take responsibility for meeting these goals. Researcher Rinsis Likert from the University of Michigan explanation what Participative Leadership Style is, requires that the CEO receive suf? cient information from employees to make important strategic decisions but that he or she leave the implementation of strategy up to the line managers (as stated in the Leadership Journey). Schaeffer changed his style of leadership when the company could deliver on its promises to customers and investors. Schoeffers style changed to The Reformer that demonstrates what is possible. He has several meeting with people outside the company to discuss health care practices, policies, and government representatives. As reformer he is the point person for tough questions. During his leadership journey Schoeffer has created concrete goals, and has wore different leadership caps that alter the way he assess a business situation. Even though past leadership styles worked each new situation is different. He has learned to pay attention to the teams dedicated to fulfill the goals. The traits from Leonard Schaeffer I can learn Throughout the years Schaeffer has developed different traits on leadership and learned from the traits and advanced to better trait. The traits that I can learn from is the participative leadership style. The participative style is to set several goals and let the team work on the project as he or she wishes. The traits Leonard Schaeffer can learn from me I know that with each situation there is a different leadership style that can be used to completer the project. The traits that Schaeffer can learn from my leadership is empathy for those who work report to him. When leaders treat employees with empathy the team there tend to be a better influential in getting the team to take initiative. If there is bad behavior in the team a good leader knows how to guide the team. This essay is on the different leadership style that Leonard Schaeffer used throughout his career. He started with a company that was on the verge of bankrupt and turned the company around. Schaeffer management style was democratic in the beginning and at the end his style was autocratic of his career at Blue Cross of California. My score on the Leadership and Team Self-Management Assessment was a 50, which is an excellent team leadership skills. The skill of diversity in leading a team is good behavior skill. Schaeffers leadership style and traits started with autocratic leadership changed to participative leadership style and ended with Schaeffers style as the reformer. Its not about words which comes out from their mouth, its about their manners presented in their conversations, although their speaking in the same language but it also can lead to misunderstanding and misinterpretation between both sexes. This is because both gender have their own criteria in presenting or having conversations, in other words each gender have their own style in having conversation to each other. Basically, Genderlect styles theory which are developed by Deborah Tannen in the book of You just dont understand distinguishing between how women and men speak in different language and styles(genderlect styles). From my point of view, this theory seems to be relevance to communication study where by we can study more emphasize how male and female have their conversations, what topic would male and female more interested and what they mean to when a contradicting actions, words or hint that they made? This will allow us to understand the speciality of different gender of homo sapiens and will help us in avoiding such arguments created from misinterpretation and misunderstanding to happen. : On the other hand, we will produced a satisfaction either to male or female when we understand the way they communicate and finally we will be aware in creating topics to communicate in order to produce a nice and better conversation. According to Tannen, as i mentioned earlier usually we are not aware of this differences between this two gender. Where women are more into serious conversation which will deeply affected human relationship. They tend not to use harsh language and this is because they have feminine sex roles such as soft spoken and eager to soothe feelings. While men style of talking, they couldnt stick to one serious topic of conversations. Men usually have ego in them whereby they tend to defense their own beliefs and willing to take a stand for it. They also prioritize their status in term of power and influences. From this differences, the word cross-cultural communication happen between them. I would agree in this, but in the point where we view it in public conversation. Men tend to hide personal things while women mostly share their personal view and thoughts as a conversation topic. This premises rarely apply when we view in a more personal and privacy conversations, men will start to change their style and this is because less exposure to other people but women are less in controlling the label of feminine sex in this situation. Tannen also mentioned that â€Å"for most women; the language of conversation is primarily a language of rapport, it is a way of establishing connections and negotiating relationships. On the other hand, Tannen refers to conversation for most men as a â€Å"primary means to preserve independence, and negotiate and maintain status in a hierarchical social order†. This statement can be related back to Tannens reference to status and connection as the primary goal driving men and women’s conversation styles. My second critique is that men tend to talk about logical and rational topic to have in conversation while women prefer talking related to feelings and their heart. When this kind of talk overlap each other, it will provide a heat argument where both sexes will maintain their interest. In the case of telling story referring to Tennans theory, men tell more stories than women. This is because to grab attention such as jokes or playing as a hero or main character in the conversation contrast to women where they likely to downplay their self. This also mean that men always tried to show that they are independence in going through obstacles different from women who needs support. But it seems to me in reality, women most likely to talk a lot more compare to men. I would agree on where men always to show that their are independence, this is because to remain in the position of having a masculine sex and protective characteristics while for me, women nowadays tend to show that they can stand at their own feet who need less support to be in the same level as men. From Tannen point of view, she view that men usually not being a good listener, to replace that position men tend to speak out suggestion and conclusions to problems that being told to them where by women do not seek for the answer and only need a way or place to let out the places. This seems to be misunderstand and wrong expectation by women and men most of the time. Men think that by providing conclusions, it will lessened the problem being face by women; intentionally helpful for them but then its vice versa from the women points of view. I agree that Tannes right that we have to understand this cross-cultural communication to avoid this issues. In order to balance up, this also have an advantage if men doing the process of giving conclusions, at least not solving the problem but will inform the speaker(women) that they(men) understand what they are trying to say. From that, like always mentioned indirectly they are being a giant ears. Here comes a contrast from the way men and women style of listening. For Tannen, women usually support their sigh of agreement or sign that they are listening with head nods or reaction such as yeah,uh-huh and etc. When they did this, it shows that they are concentrating on the confession of the speaker but in mens view, they prefer to remain silent while the speaker talk as showing sign of concentration because for them sign perform by women are an interruption to the conversations. When this happen, a regular misunderstanding will be produce. Thus will lead to arguments between men and women. In order to avoid this, men and women have to understand each other of way of listening and balance the reaction done according to how the situation are. Other than that, Tannen also involve the way men and women use the purpose of asking question in different ways. She mentioned that men most likely not to ask question because they view it as a threat to their status and image. When they asked question, it shows that they are not superior enough to be a men in front of the public while women use it as means of equalizing and creating connections. She said that women always tag their opinions with a question at the end to avoid for the potential disagreement which might drive people apart to occur. For example â€Å"would you like to stop by and have a drink? †, original intention of women when they ask this is that they wanted to stop by but when men directly said that â€Å"no, i dont†, it will reate a non satisfaction conversation. For me, this is because men are too direct when their being asked while women always look foward for a good response to receive. Its not that they care about their status and image, most of the time men will give a simple answer for a simple question while women are expecting a comfortable answer from a simple question. She also touch regarding conflict. For her, men are more comfortable with conflicts where they took it as a competition or contest to gain victory where women aim to avoid conflict between them. I would not agree with this, it doesnt sounds plausible to me, i found that most of the conflict occur are created from women. This is because they are more sensitive than men which consider little things as an affective tools to be argue while men will ignore simple things which will lead to arguments and prioritize more important matter to argue at. The purpose of this theory is for we to understand the characteristics in men and women to avoid worse argument and huge disagreements created from the differences. It also make us realized that the fault occur in both sexes- male and female whereby it happen in both gender. By understanding this differences and consequences that might happen, although we will not create a Utopia but at least we will have a better understanding towards each other as homo sapiens who use communication to develop ideas, form a suggestion and expressing confession. In addition to my critique above, Tannes theory are more concentrating on the differences between those two gender but she did not concern about why and how this differences occur. Is it men and women naturally determine to be that way? or maybe social influences structured them? This is more important where by, we will know the reason of this differences to occur and we will suggest a better suggestion on how to deal with the differences. The points that i disagree where Tennan seems to be more bias to women. This was shown where women provide a good and acceptable characteristic suits with their feminine sex while men seems to have more crucial characteristics and sounds unacceptable which need to change. It shows from her statement here men prioritize status rather than their relation. For me, it depends on the individual itself where this theory should not be generalized to all men and women. Although this theory is easy to apply since she provide with simple explanation, but women or men will start to stereotypical each other from the way they communicate. To sum up this critiques, I think Tennans theories does help us in solving in defining the difference between male-female communication styles but for me it is not valid when comes to conflict in relationships it takes more than that. By understanding this, it will decreases the chances for having an argument on such matters. After learning this theory, i also realized that it is very helpful in the study of communication because it consist of most relations that we will encounter in our life which are heterosexual. This theory are very useful in our everyday life especially to understand personal relationship although its not more applicable to public speaking. It do increases our awareness in treating our partner with our understanding towards their interest and their behavior.
